As you guys can see, things are done differently down here in the Apple isle. He puts the Bonds and G. Hall to shame with the amount of noms for each race. K. Prentice had 5 in the diamond classic in Perth last night which is a big effort, incidentally it was won by a long shot and not one of KP horses either.
I always thought you were a West Aussie Pat
No Kev, moved over to the Apple Isle 8-9 months ago although I do still own a couple of slow ones in Perth
You would be the cat Trish ;)
What's happening with race 9 tonight at Melton? An M0-M2 worth $5000 and only 6 horses in it. Supposed to be the home of harness racing and a Friday night as well !!!
The reduction in stakes in Vic is ominous, compare it to NSW where they held a Tuesday meet worth more than our Friday. This Saturday's Menangle meet might have a couple of cheap Metro races but cheap up there is $11k and the rest of the program is also much greater than Melton's even when Melton is having an above average Friday (the $5k race is probably Vic's way of affording some $20k races)
A full field would be nice but really whats the problem? It gives horses on their mark a chance to win a race instead of racing against in form M0-M2 horses and being retired because non-competitive and it means these 6 horses aren't dropping back in grade so it isn't unfair on the lower graded horses.
Fair point Breno but I believe in paying the performers that put on the show. Maybe they don't deserve to be racing for $20k (Mind you Stagger Lee is only a 5yo who won his M0 at his last start) but $5k? Will this race bring in a ¼ of the turnover/revenue that a $20k will?
In the tiered racing thread Kyle asked what has happened to the $10k races - if this race on a Friday night at Melton is only allocated $5k it is hard to imagine what race is going to receive $10k
Chance at 1st prize is better than being an also run or retired in terms of paying the performer. Stagger Lee and Stewart horse change the equation - but they werent the horses they were trying to get in the race.
Had it been a C6+ no better than M2 for $5000 at a midweek country meeting would you be ok with it?
Probably the Len Smith mile Kevin, and some of the martians would find no problem with that either.
This 5k race is likely a Supplementary race given they got enough noms of "like" class. Ironically it may produce the biggest % profit on the night based on tote income compared to prizemoney paid out.
Doubt the winner does an M front despite it being an M race as the rules state an M penalty race must be worth more than I think $14,999
No doubt some of those horses were not at the "retirement stage" as suggested based on their recent form. So we assume it was a supplementary race because they don't advertise it. The time wasn't slow either. If solarsonic and Stagger Lee are not better than Grins rendition I will eat my hat.
Not a bad result all round, $1.80 favourite in a 6 horse field for a Stewart runner. Like Kyle said, only a country penalty and quite possibly a profitable outcome for HRV/the industry.
No one forces you to nominate for a supplementary race, pays for a few weeks training fees instead of trialling or being an also ran as Breno suggested. Pick up a C class race you can't get back if you win an M.
For the better class/in form horse like Stagger Lee and Solarsonic it's a bit like the quality 3yo's returning and running in a C0. If you win through your sires campaign without grabbing a C0/C1 first you've lost that opportunity. A loophole (another thread) but in this case $1.80 v $1.04.
Don't really see the need to list it on the card as a supp race, let your eye be your...when you're having a dabble.
Thanks for copying that Wayne, as previously stated my problem with it is the prizemoney - paying those who put on the show. Even that that small field with 2 standouts attracted over 2/3rds of the turnover that the $20k race before it did.
I think if the $10k tier really exists then this should be a $10k race
As Kyle asked in another thread "...where have all the $10,000 races in the country gone?" From memory the split up under the tiered system saw 400 10K races proposed, obviously about 8 per week and was it mainly/only Friday and Saturday meetings, and yep, country meetings having most i.e. if Melton metro was Friday, the Saturday country meeting would be 10K and if Melton raced Saturday the country Friday meeting was 10K. Can see how that adds up to 400 races.
So, other than offering more opportunities with the Supp races, which I'm not against, the million $ deficit forecast is being clawed back by the Supps instead of 10K races?
There are 11 war-related named 2 year olds in WA this season. War Club, Fight Song, The War Nurse, Billy Boeing (maybe a stretch), Bee Seventeen, Enemy Lines, Naval Aviator, Ultimate Major, Allwood Peacemaker, Beach Landing and Warriors Code. I thought that was interesting
It is Katie. Not a WA 2yo but I see War Dan Bad Girl is no.19 on the Top 2yo's chart

Be a shame if Soho Tribeca goes down for a while. Great looking horse , tons of ability and nowhere near his peak
The other finalist in that report - Petacular has trialled and been cleared

Thanks Wayne.
Breeders Crown 2yo's finals. 2009 was $311k , 2010 was $308k , 2011 was $312k , 2012 was $303k.
Could someone please explain to me why the 3yo Breeders Crown finals is worth 95K less than the 2yo final? Is it because there are not as many 2 year old races as 3 year olds? This seems a big discrepency and should be reviewed.
Getting prizemoney back to those who paid sustaining fees quicker. Its essentially the 2yos grand final who only race for half a season, compared to 3yos who have had Derbys and Oaks right throughout the season.
Smolda has been retired :(
Great career and won most of the big ones.
